This is the second generation of Sony’s trailblazing PlayStation video game console, the PlayStation 2. Following its release in March 2000, it immediately received critical acclaim and an unprecedented level of popularity, eventually resulting in being the best-selling console in history, selling over 150 million units worldwide.

What separated the PlayStation 2 from its rivals was its multifaceted functionality. It contained a uniquely diverse range of genres and cutting-edge gaming experiences across them. At a time when DVD players were a pricey, important technology, Sony introduced the ability to play DVDs directly from the PS2, solidifying its position as a valuable home entertainment technology. Additionally, the PlayStation 2 marked a significant leap forward in connectivity with the incorporation of full Internet access as part of the sixth generation of consoles, further expanding its appeal and utility. Sony’s strategic focus on the global market ensured its worldwide adoption and cultural impact. Renowned for its high-quality and sometimes exclusive games, the PlayStation 2 boasted an expansive library that set new standards for the industry, outshining its primary competitors like the Xbox. The history of this iconic console makes clear its status as an influential cultural phenomenon that redirected the world of entertainment.
